The successful completion of the Marikana Extension 13 Housing Development project in North West is a testament to our commitment to community development. This project marks our efforts to make a positive impact in the Marikana community, showcasing our dedication to social responsibility and collaboration.
The Marikana project aimed to comprehensively assess the demographic, social, and housing-related characteristics of informal settlements within Marikana Township. Over 6 months, our team worked diligently alongside local stakeholders to ensure the project’s success. This project reflects our vision and mission in creating lasting change through meaningful engagement and partnership with the communities we serve. Central to the project was our commitment to engaging with the Marikana community throughout every phase of the project. We are committed to continuing our partnerships with local communities, exploring new opportunities for collaboration, and furthering our impact in the regions where we operate.
Through the diligent efforts of our team and the local stakeholders, it is seen that:
- A record of statistics and socio-economic factors such as household demographics, income levels, employment sectors, and the prevalence of disabilities provide valuable socio-economic insights of the community which are crucial for planning the housing development. The enumeration report findings recorded a total of 3,086 surveys, 2,305 households, 6,184 structures, and a population of 7,173 within the eight informal settlements of the Marikana Township.
- Based on the findings, we also propose several recommendations for the housing development, including incorporating universal accessibility features, offering diverse housing options, prioritizing proximity, implementing employer-assisted housing schemes, enhancing transportation access and promoting sustainable urban development.
